Sort worn bedding and towels before they travel with you

Bedding and towels tend to build up in a linen cupboard over the years, long after some of them have stopped being genuinely useful. Thin, greying towels and sheets with worn patches often get kept simply out of habit, rather than because they still serve any real purpose.

Before packing begins, it is worth taking everything out of the cupboard and laying it out where it can all be seen at once. Items that have clearly seen better days become much easier to spot once they are no longer hidden behind newer, better sets further back on the shelf.

Keep what still works, let the rest go

Anything that is thin, stained beyond saving, or simply unpleasant to use no longer earns a place in a moving box. It takes up space that could otherwise be used for bedding and towels that will genuinely be needed in the new home.

Sets that are still in decent condition but no longer suit the household, perhaps because they are the wrong size or simply not to anyone's taste any more, can be passed on rather than packed. That way they still get some use, instead of sitting unused in a new cupboard.

What remains after this sort can be folded neatly and packed together by set, so that matching sheets and pillowcases stay paired throughout the move. This small step makes it far quicker to make up a bed on the very first night in the new home.

A cupboard full only of bedding and towels that are actually used feels noticeably more pleasant to open, both before and after the move. The short time spent sorting pays off every time fresh linen is needed in the new place.

It is worth doing this sort a few weeks before moving day rather than at the very last minute, when there is little energy left for careful decisions. A calmer pace makes it far easier to be honest about what genuinely deserves a place in the new home.
